Aya Sophia Mosque History

The Aya Sophia Mosque is a historically significant location that has lived through many ages and lifetimes. It provides testimony to not just one but multiple historical eras! Aya Sophia is a reminder of the passing of time from the Roman to the Byzantine to the Ottoman Empires.

Aya Sophia is a monumental architectural masterpiece and a massive religious symbol with an approximately 1500-year history. It has a meaningful story that has been passed down through the ages.

The construction of the church on top of the ruins of an earlier church was ordered by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in 532 AD, which is when the Aya Sophia tale really gets going. Before Seville Cathedral was built, Aya Sophia was the largest Christian cathedral in the world after it was finished. This condition persisted for more than 900 years. However, the chapel was turned into a mosque and Sultan Mehmed II (Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror) offered the first Friday prayer there after Constantinople fell to the Ottomans in late May 1453.

Aya Sophia's tale continued after that. Aya Sophia's religious services were terminated by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1931, and the building became an art museum in 1934. But Recep Tayyip Erdoan, the president of Turkey, later reinstated it as the nation's official mosque.

Why Is the Aya Sophia Mosque Called That?

The legend of a Coptic Egyptian saint who used to worship idols is where the name "Aya Sophia Mosque" comes from. She gave her life to prayer, fasting, and charitable work after becoming a Christian. The zealous persecutor Roman ruler insisted she revert to her previous religion. She was told to be executed because she refused. When Constantine the Great, the Byzantine emperor, learned of the legend surrounding the saint, he moved her remains and erected the magnificent Aya Sophia cathedral in Istanbul.
